Making that Career Pivot

Career 1

An interviewer could have difficulty seeing a person for anything other than what their experience has been focused on.  People get pigeonholed that way.

Pre-LinkedIn you could create a resume tailored to whatever it was you were targeting. Sick of your grind? Create a resume that focuses on your interests / not your experience.  Fast forward to 2022; you might have to delete your profile to do the same thing. Our public work profiles can make a pivot more challenging this way.

I was looking at a profile that showed 3 title changes over a period of just 2 years and I see some genius in the transition.

His title went from “Software Engineer” to “Data Science Instructor” to “Data Engineer”. To be precise there is a 1 year overlap between the first and second title. Brilliant

Obviously landing the job as a Data Science instructor with a bootcamp was likely not an easy task, but you can see how the hiring director at a bootcamp might jump to bring in a senior level software engineer that has made the conscious decision to pursue continuing education within the data science domain.

Once that title: “Data Science Instructor” was crystalized I suspect the recruiter calls for Data Engineer roles started coming in.

What a great way to give back; simultaneously controlling the direction of your own career.
